AFA was founded in 1983 to shelter and provide care for abused, abandoned and stray dogs and cats of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Former board member and longtime volunteer, Gretchen Kuhns, attended her first Action for Animals Humane Society (AFA) fundraiser over 20 years ago. In that period of time, she and AFA have helped to place thousands and thousands of needy animals in loving homes. Luckily for us, Gretchen has taken the time to speak with the Pawstruck Team–providing valuable information on behalf of her worthy charitable organization.

AFA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-government funded organization located just outside Latrobe, Pennsylvania on Route 217. For more than 25 years, it has been providing a no-kill safe haven for Westmoreland County’s abandoned and/or abused dogs and cats. As the oldest no-kill shelter in the area, AFA helps to shield all local four-legged friends from unwarranted euthanasia.

Recent Adoptees

Members of AFA work to adopt animals into responsible homes and do their part to reduce animal overpopulation by providing low cost spaying and neutering options. Additionally, they supply educational programs, free housing for animals in abusive homes, and first response disaster relief.

AFA property houses many amazing facilities including the Blessed’s Dog Park, Tigre Pavilion (a cage-less cat area), outdoor play areas, private visitation rooms, and beautiful walking paths.

As is the case with all pet charities, AFA accepts monetary and physical donations. What makes them unique is that they are governed by an all-volunteer board of directors. In other words, they don’t have an employed Executive Director which is the case with many organizations. This means that all the donated funds go directly to the supplies and resources needed to save the lives of the animals in need. If you’d like to help out, AFA could use the following in addition to monetary contributions: unopened bags or cans of pet food, leashes & collars, kitty litter, and newspaper.

If you live near Latrobe, Pennyslvania, make sure to get involved with all AFA fundraising events that happen year round. The next event is their annual Howl-O-Ween Dog Party and costume contest. The event is Saturday, October 17th from 12-2pm.
